Coat-rack on a chair? The Oom Stool by Matthew Weatherly

By Lizza at 11:22 am on Monday, December 31, 2007

oom-stool.jpgThey say necessity is the mother of invention. I wonder what kind of necessity prompted Matthew Weatherly to come up with the Oom Stool? Was it because he entered some hotel bar somewhere that didn’t have a coat room or anything else where he could hang up his coat or jacket? Maybe he had an “Aha!” moment and thought, “I’ll make some commercial reception furniture that will help solve this problem.”

Modern wooden bar stools by Norman Cherner: Slim elegance for your bar

By Lizza at 9:24 am on Saturday, December 29, 2007

Wood is a popular material in furniture design. In addition to having a warm, cozy aura, the surface design sometimes hardly needs any embellishment at all because the grain of the wood itself is decoration enough. It’s no wonder then that this natural beauty is the material of choice for certain designers like Norman Cherner.

Stainless steel seating for your restaurant: The Johnsonian Director’s bar stool

By Lizza at 10:50 am on Thursday, December 27, 2007

“Lights, camera, action!” Famous words that are heard in every movie set all over the world. The languages might be different but the thought behind them are the same. Once the director commands filming to start, everyone on the set follows his or her directions. And then the director sits back in the iconic director’s chair to supervise the action as it unfolds.

johnsonianbarstool.jpgIf I owned a bar or a hotel, I think it would be nice to have some of those chairs around, make guests feel like they’re in control of the action. But since I can’t get my hands on the ones used by superstar directors like Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese, I guess I’d have to satisfy this design wish with something like the Johnsonian Director’s Bar Stool by Eric Brand.

Finding designer barstools at non-designer prices

By Lizza at 8:29 pm on Sunday, December 23, 2007

Entrepreneurs who are thinking of opening a commercial hospitality establishment like a bar, inn, or restaurant should know that it isn’t just the food or service they provide that will bring them much-needed traffic and success. The way their establishment looks is also key to attracting – or repelling – first-time guests and/or repeat customers. But sometimes budgets aren’t sky-high to begin with. Oh, the dilemma of finding high-quality contract furniture that won’t burn a hole in one’s pocketbook!

A sweet tooth for furniture: Philippe Starck’s bar stool

By Lizza at 3:00 pm on Friday, December 21, 2007

Parts of the human body are inspirational fodder for furniture designers. I’ve seen tables whose legs resemble a human female’s, sofas that look like oversized lips, to name a few. But I think this is the first time I’ve ever come across a dentally inspired chair. No, the chair doesn’t resemble dentures. It’s much simpler than that. Behold the Tooth Stool by Philippe Starck.

philippe_starck_the_tooth_stool.jpgI must admit that this chair’s novelty is a delight to behold. It’s not just a stool. It can be used as a side table as well. Manufactured by XO, it is constructed in rotation molding polypropylene and comes in gold, silver, or copper lacquered metallic versions. A silver grey batch dyed version is also available.

Into Africa: Nairobi’s Lord Delamere Terrace and Bar

By Lizza at 2:05 pm on Wednesday, December 19, 2007

lord-delamere-terrace-and-bar.jpgAn African safari, now that’s an adventure I’d be interested in trying out one of these days. Not to hunt, no. Just to see wild animals in their natural environment. But from what I’ve seen on television and read in books, the excitement of the experience in addition to the wilting heat can be exhausting. So maybe relaxing in a hotel bar after a day of going on safari would be a good idea.
