A sweet tooth for furniture: Philippe Starck’s bar stool

Parts of the human body are inspirational fodder for furniture designers. I’ve seen tables whose legs resemble a human female’s, sofas that look like oversized lips, to name a few. But I think this is the first time I’ve ever come across a dentally inspired chair. No, the chair doesn’t resemble dentures. It’s much simpler than that. Behold the Tooth Stool by Philippe Starck.

philippe_starck_the_tooth_stool.jpgI must admit that this chair’s novelty is a delight to behold. It’s not just a stool. It can be used as a side table as well. Manufactured by XO, it is constructed in rotation molding polypropylene and comes in gold, silver, or copper lacquered metallic versions. A silver grey batch dyed version is also available.

Starck has designed plenty of furniture for hotels. The Tooth Stool, for example, is a fixture in the Saint Martins Lane Hotel in London, England, the interiors of which he designed himself. This particular piece of seating isn’t found in the hotel’s bars, though; it’s located right in the lobby and is one of the first things a guest entering the premises sees. Right away they will have more than an inkling that maybe the furniture and furnishings in the establishment are far from ordinary. It looks to be just what it says it is: an urban resort that vibrates energy. Its interiors – and its exterior a well – are awash in color.

Just what type of chairs can be found in the hotel’s watering holes? The stools at the Rum Bar don’t look too comfortable to me. Though their modern appearance can’t be denied, the seats just seem like they’re barely able to accommodate even half of a person’s bottom.

The chairs in the Light Bar are a different matter altogether. In addition to well-padded, more comfortable looking bar stools, there are also contemporary dining chairs. No Tooth Stool in that part of the hotel, it seems!
