Hudson bar stool by Philippe Starck: Part of the Hudson Hotel’s interior decoration

If there’s one city in the world that is as multicultural as it can get, it would probably be New York City. It truly is a melting pot, and many establishments – old and new – reflect this. Take, for instance, the Hudson Hotel. Opened in 2000, it’s been described as owner Ian Schrager’s haven for strangers who don’t mind mingling with other strangers in that busy metropolis.

hudson_barstool.jpgMuch of the interior design was done by Philippe Starck, one of the titans in the furniture design industry. Though not all the furniture and furnishings in the hotel are Starck’s creations (bar tables, beds, sofas by other designers are installed there), it does include at least some of his pieces, one of which is the Hudson bar stool. In fact, Starck designed this particular seating item specifically for the hotel.

Manufactured by Emeco, the Hudson bar stool is made entirely of highly polished aluminum. It is resistant to corrosion, so it’s projected to have a very long product life. Not only that, 80 percent of it is recycled aluminum, making it a very eco-friendly chair. It measures 43 inches high, 17.75 inches wide, and 21.25 inches deep. The seat height is 29.5 inches.

The Hudson Hotel is very much a modern establishment, so it is not surprising that this very modern-looking and highly polished bar stool would look right at home in it. But the hotel’s modern design isn’t confined to very glossy and shiny furniture. In fact, it’s a mix of various looks and styles that by all rights should clash with each other, but for some reason don’t. The way the hotel’s bar look, for instance, has been described as something like French monarchy vis-à-vis the space age. In any case, it’s a fitting metaphor for how eclectic and multi-personality New York City is.
