Into Africa: Nairobi’s Lord Delamere Terrace and Bar
An African safari, now that’s an adventure I’d be interested in trying out one of these days. Not to hunt, no. Just to see wild animals in their natural environment. But from what I’ve seen on television and read in books, the excitement of the experience in addition to the wilting heat can be exhausting. So maybe relaxing in a hotel bar after a day of going on safari would be a good idea.
One such place is the Lord Delamere Terrace and Bar, which is found in a luxury hotel called Fairmont The Norfolk in Nairobi, Kenya. It’s a casual place, no need to get all dressed up to patronize this watering hole, and there’s no need to make reservations either. It is a historic place, as is the rest of the hotel. Both the locals and visitors from abroad have been visiting here since 1904. It’s in Africa, but there are no overt references to African culture in terms of the bar’s design and furniture. Modern café chairs that seem to be comfortably well-padded are the norm. The stools by the counter do not seem to be particular to Africa in any way, they could be situated in some bar in another part of the world and they would still look as good. I think the whole room exudes an aura of casual comfort, which isn’t bad at all.
The hotel is still under the process of being refurbished, but it’s open for business. It’s one of the most popular hotels in the area, counting luminaries from the fields of politics and show business among its past and present guests. Celebrity or not, anybody who wants to go on a safari or experience an African beach is most welcome. Just remember that although it is more modern and less stuffy than many other luxury hotels, it isn’t your typical backpacker-type accommodation either.
